Being diagnosed with a new illness and seeking extended treatment at a hospital far from home is always stressful for a family. With this frightening medical crisis, patients and families encounter other crises, as well: existential and personal spiritual struggles, challenges to long-held beliefs; questions of meaning; doubts about personal resilience; and many more.
The five full-time chaplains at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital accompany patients and families to promote peace and healthy adjustment to the hospital environment. They offer emotional and spiritual counseling, age appropriate spiritual activities, worship opportunities, and rituals to promote positive spiritual coping.
In collaboration with the Resilience Center, chaplains also provide both group and individual sessions for staff who may experience emotional and spiritual burden as caregivers. The St. Jude mission supports cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity, promotes inclusivity, and provides a rich and sacred environment in which chaplains feel privileged to serve
- Masters Degree in Divinity, Theology, or equivalent from an accredited institution. Ordination, commission, or endorsement from a major religious body. Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an accredited program
- One year post CPE full-time chaplaincy employment. Pediatric experience preferred
- Spanish Speaking preferred
- (LC: APC-CERT) Board certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains required within two years from date of hire
